Preparing for Football Season and Your Finances

Football season is back! Whether you are a Husky or a Cougar, a Seahawk or a 49er, your team and its fan base are brimming with optimism this season. What you may not realize is that the outcome of this season is a result of the decisions and actions from weeks, months, and years past.

Players were scouted and drafted, team owners hired coaching staff, buildings and parking lots constructed, playing strategies were implemented, marketing campaigns developed, and prices were set, ever before the game started.

Football is a business, and just like any business, the quality of the process affects the quality of the product.

Occasionally, one or multiple parts of the process are overlooked. When these oversights occur in football, it often results in a losing season.

Similarly, your financial life is affected by life’s big decisions. Am I saving enough for retirement? Should I accept this job offer? Should I go back to school? Should I buy this home? Should I start my own business? Will my family be taken care of if something were to happen to me? How much should I be saving for my children’s education?

When oversights occur within a football team and success doesn’t happen, the fan base acts as a great accountability partner. The team identifies the weaknesses and changes are made.

Who is your accountability partner? Who encourages you to make the changes you need to shore up your weaknesses?

Just like football, life comes with many seasons. Whether you are financially successful or not can often depend on a few key principles.

  • Are you aware of your current financial status?

Am I meeting my goals? Do I have goals? Do I know where all my accounts are located? Is there money left over at the end of the month? What’s my budget like? Am I on track to retire? Do I have enough insurance?

  • Who is holding you accountable?
