Stock Market Volatility

It has been speculated that stock market volatility has increased over the years. This may be true, however the perception of volatility may also be heightened by the media and the ease with which we can access financial information on the internet. Regardless of the reason, you can see in this chart that there has always been intra-year volatility, both positive and negative. From 1980 to 2014 the S&P 500 had an average intra-year decline of 14.2%, but had positive annual returns 27 out of the 35 year span.
